U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY - replace existing chimney

Replace existing brick chimney at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point

International Chimney was awarded a contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to replace an existing brick chimney at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.

Because boilers feeding the existing chimney were online and needed to remain so, a temporary stack had to be custom designed, fabricated, then installed before demolition of the exisiting chimney could begin. A blanked-off branch of the duct feeding the existing chimney terminated just above the Powerhouse roof and was chosen as the tap-in point for the temporary stack.

Measurements of the building and duct were taken, the temporary stack designed, fabricated, then installed as shown. The temporary stack can also be seen above the Powerhouse roof. A temporary plate had to be installed in the existing duct to divert gasses into the temporary stack, thus bypassing the existing brick chimney. A short outage was required to install the plate. Just under 100' of 6' diameter temporary stack was installed.

Once the temporary stack was installed and online, demolition of the existing chimney could begin. Demolition is shown underway. Note that the existing chimney is not visible from outside the building as it is intentionally concealed behind existing building walls (just behind the temporary stack) for aesthetic purposes.

Following demolition of the existing brick chimney, construction of the new 139'-6" high by 10' top inside diameter brick chimney could begin. A stainless steel chimney/roof cap, a steam line, an emission monitoring system with Data Acquisition and numerous other appurtenances were installed. Following construction of the new chimney, gasses were diverted back into the chimney and the temporary stack was removed.
