Burrows Paper, Little Falls, NY - chimney replacement

Replace concrete chimney with stainless steel stack (including temporary stack)

International Chimney Corp was asked to replace an existing 150' high x 10' top diameter concrete chimney (located in a congested alleyway) with a new 130' high x 4' top ID x 6' bottom ID stainless steel and weathering steel stack, all while keeping plant boilers in operation and critical driveways open.

To meet this challenge, a temporary steel stack was first installed above new ductwork adjacent to the powerhouse building. Once gasses were rerouted from the concrete chimney to the temporary stack by installing a temporary baffle plate in the horizontal ductwork during a short (several hour) plant outage, demolition of the concrete chimney could begin. An asbestos-based coating was first removed from exterior surfaces of the concrete chimney before demolition brought the chimney to grade, piece by piece. The foundation was reconstructed and anchor bolts positioned, and the new steel stack and new breeching were installed.

In the tight quarters adjacent to the stack, the crane had to be placed to avoid overhead piping while at the same time keeping an often-used overhead door and driveway area operational.
