Currituck Beach Lighthouse, Corolla, NC

International Chimney Corporation negotiated a design build contract with the Outer Banks Conservationists, Inc. for a two-phase restoration of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse in 1999.

Included in the restoration was the conditions assessment which supplemented earlier studies, and specification services.

ICC forces worked with Alex Klahm Architectural & Metal Design to furbish the gallery deck hand rail and support system.

Work was also performed on the lantern room level in conjunction with refurbishment of the venting system. All cast iron and fabricated steel received new coatings.

While on site, a condition was discovered which jeopardized support of the large first order fresnel lens. A support beam underneath the lens was positioned such that it was almost centered over one service room window below. Load had transferred from the cracked masonry to the cast iron window frame - which failed - and finally to the outside verticals of the gallery deck brackets. The brackets were in the beginning to fail. In order to correct the problem, ICC installed lintels over the windows, repaired and replaced individual masonry units and reinforced cast iron window frames.

Additional work was performed on the staircase and landings in 2005.
