Ellis Island, NY - chimney restoration

International Chimney Corporation was originally contracted to perform a structure inspection of the Ellis Island boiler house chimney. As a result of the inspection it was determined that the uppermost radial brick portion of the chimney above the roof line was deteriorated beyond repair and would require replacement. The subsequent rehabilitation contract was based on International Chimney’s assessment and design.

ICC work began before the construction of the temporary New Jersey Bridge to Ellis Island and preparations involved mobilization of all personnel, material and equipment via barge. At the start of work there was no power, water or sanitation on the island.

After the exterior preservation and rehabilitation was complete, the interior design around the chimney’s three flues was changed to allow for four flues within the same space to correct a design flaw noted in a similar boiler/incinerator operation on Liberty Island. ICC’s design blended a reconfiguration of interior space with the selection of high temperature refractory materials and a corrosive resistant alloy to solve the problem.
